Cued Speech

Direct Access to Spoken Language

  • Cued Speech allows a person to cue spoken language in consonant-vowel pairs as we traditionally express them in spoken language.
  • An individual can speak and cue at the same time, reinforcing auditory and speech development, while allowing parents and professionals to support language immersion in their native languages.

Visualizing Consonants and Vowels

With the mouth as a reference point, eight hand shapes represent consonants and four hand placements represent vowels. For each speech sound, or phoneme, a handshape and hand placement are combined with the mouth shape to visually show the building blocks of spoken language.

Ease of Learning

Because Cued Speech is based on the lingusitic properties of spoken language, most individuals are able to learn the system in a few days or less and become expressively fluent at the sentence level within months.

Accessibility and Federal Law

Cued Speech, or specifically, cued language services are recognized in federal law addressing accommodations, including the American with Disabilities Act (ADA), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

If you are having difficulty working with school districts or your employee to get reasonable accommodations, contact the National Cued Speech Association at info@cuedspeech.org
